Dr Bach
Dr Edward Bach qualified as a doctor in the early 1900s, but soon recognised that the medical profession focused on the patient's symptoms, rather than the patient. He understood that physical health is inextricably linked to the way we think and feel - something that continues to be largely ignored by clinicians today.
If that idea seems rather "out there", then you may be interested to learn that a relatively new field of science, epigenetics, is exploring a similar idea; that because our thoughts and beliefs are the primary component of our personal environment, they have the capacity to alter our gene expression. You can read more about this in Bruce Lipton's excellent book The Biology of Belief.
Dr Bach was drawn to the principles of homeopathy and developed the Bach nosodes - homeopathic remedies prepared from intestinal flora, still used by homeopaths today. Again, he was ahead of his time, as science now acknowledges the role of the intestinal microbiome in health and mental well-being.

Despite the success of the nosodes, Dr Bach disliked working with bacteria and injections, feeling instinctively that healing should be gentle - and that the purity and simplicity of nature held the key. He relocated from London to the country, moving away not only from the City, but also from focusing his efforts on the need for scientific proof. Instead, he allowed the principle "treat the patient, not their disease" to be his guiding light and began to experience an enhanced sensitivity in his mind and body.
He would wander the fields and lanes until he found a flower which intuitively, he knew would rebalance the particular emotional challenge he was experiencing at that time, restoring his peace of mind. In this way he discovered the 38 remedies which form his system of flower essences.
Dr Bach believed the remedies would address any emotional challenge it is possible to experience. He recognized that although the reasons for the challenges would evolve, the actual emotions would remain the same. For this reason, Dr Bach believed his system was complete and asked that no further remedies be added to it.

The Remedies
The remedies are produced by laying the flower heads in spring water and resting them in full sunlight for three hours, which infuses the water with their essence. This water is then mixed with brandy, as a preservative, to create the mother tincture.
When you take the remedies, you aren't ingesting the plant itself, but instead introducing its energetic vibration or frequency to the energy field of your body.
There are only trace amounts of alcohol in the remedies, making them safe for all age groups and for animals too. Alcohol free remedies (using either vegetable glycerine or apple cider vinegar as a preservative) are also available.

The Bach Remedies are available from a number of high street and online retailers, including:
